Folks,
I am taking this class entirely on-line because I live in Ohio. I feel a lost because I have nobody to work with. I am also a little rusty on some of the math concepts, but I catch up quickly and I am determined to work very hard to succeed in the class.
?
Are there any of you that are willing to work with me on problem sets, papers, etc?
Please email me or call me.
?
I truly appreciate it.
Thank you in advance.
?

Hi everyone,
This is just a reminder that I will be holding office hours tomorrow from
10-12 in the basement computer lab in CGIS-N. There will also be office
hours Wednesday from 10-12 in the same location. Hope to see you there!
Iain
Forgive the spam, but anyone willing to entertain a 3rd (or 4th or 5th) wheel for the problem sets? I'm actually a grad student from the CS department so I'm a bit of a black sheep in the class. (Don't worry, I _promise_ I won't talk about World of Warcraft, and I've been known to see the sun every once in a while...)
Nick
Dear Han: It would be helpful if you listed a time and a place for people to
meet. Perhaps a saturday or a sunday might work for most.

Hi everyone,
I forgot one crucial piece of information on slide 7 for solving the problem
last night. Apologies for this omission. An amended slide 7 is now posted!
Iain
Hi everyone,
Problem Set 1 is now posted, and is due Thursday February 4th. I have also
posted a very short R script introducing basic matrix algebra operations in
R which may be helpful for working on Problem 3. Office hours will be held
next week from 10-12 on both Monday and Wednesday in the computer lab in the
basement of CGIS-N.
Best,
Iain
Hey folks,
A quick reminder that we're having our first section tonight at 6pm in CGIS
K 354. It will be taped (as will all sections moving forward), but I hope to
see you there!
Maya
I am trying to load my data table in R, but its giving me some trouble. The
data was forwarded to me by somebody and its in (.sav) format. I downloaded
the foreign package to make sure that it would recognize this extension, but
it doesn't seem like the problem is with the extension. It might be the
file. I am getting the following error:
"Warning message:
In read.table("NIUA_final_dataset.sav") :
incomplete final line found by readTableHeader on
'NIUA_final_dataset.sav'"
This is the command that I typed:
dataset <- read.table("NIUA_final_dataset.sav")
I also typed the "load" command and it gave me an error too.
HELP!

Hey folks,
In case you weren't able to make it to the R orientation session, I've
posted the material I went through on the course website (under "Sections"
and "R Orientation"). Feel free to peruse the code and work through it at
your own pace. There is no better way to familiarize yourself with R than to
just sit down and play around with it!
Also -- I ran out of time to discuss LaTeX. Essentially, LaTeX is an
attractive way to prepare documents that have mathematical expressions,
plots, and tables. The learning curve is at first steep, but learning how to
use LaTeX quickly pays off and you can soon produce professional-looking
articles and papers quite easily.
For more info on how to get started with LaTeX, feel free to check out
http://people.fas.harvard.edu/~blackwel/latex.html, which was put together
by one of our colleagues in another statistics course. I also posted in the
"R Orientation" folder a sample LaTeX template that you might want to use in
writing up your problem sets.
As always, please use the list to bounce off questions and ideas. LaTeX is
not required for the course, but we use it ourselves, and I recommend at
least giving it a shot!
best, Maya
