If you do not have access to one or more tools, please send me an email (not
to the whole list, just to me - i.e. don't just hit reply) with the list of
tools that you don't have access to, your harvard email (or official email
that you gave to Harvard when you registered), and your XID/Harvard ID if
you have one. If you don't have an XID/Harvard ID, please tell me
that explicitly and we will have to work on getting you one.
Thanks everyone. If you could do this today, I would greatly appreciate it
so we can start resolving the stray access issues.

Hey folks,
I would like to know if there are other students in the class who share my
research interests. If you have a 90%+ chance of taking the class and might
potentially be interested in doing the final paper on some aspect of long
term care (access, financing, insurance, or quality); or using data from
Medicare, Medicaid, Health and Retirement Study, or MEPS (or other U.S.
health data sets I may not have thought of!)--holla back!
I won't infer any commitment, I just to know right away if it's going to be
difficult to find a co-author with similar aims, since I want to invest the
time and energy into a topic that might beget future projects, or at least
get some experience working with data that I may encounter again.
You may respond just to me at portia.cornell(a)gmail.com and not the whole
group.
Cheers,
Portia Cornell

Hi all --
The lecture questions for the second lecture are up on the main page of the
Course Website, and are titled "Lecture 2 Quiz". By Sunday at 8AM, you
should watch the last 10 minutes of Lecture 1 and Lecture 2 online with the
video annotation tool, and answer these short questions. To access the
video annotation tool, go to "Lecture Video Annotation" on the course
website. The last 10 minutes of Lecture 1 are the last 10 minutes of the
video "Spring 2010 Lecture 01-2" (start at minute 38:00). For Lecture 2,
the two videos you should watch are "Spring 2010 Lecture 02-1" and "Spring
2010 Lecture 02-2".
The slides that go with the lectures are under "Lecture Notes" and are
called "the basics" and "Theories of Inference". (Download both sets of
slides "to print".) The slides for the last 10 minutes of Lecture 1 start
with "The Birthday Problem" slide (pg 30) in "the basics". Then Lecture 2
starts with "What is a Probability Density?" slide (pg 33) in "the basics"
and continues in the "Theories of Inference" slides.
As a reminder, the reading for this week is UPM Chapters 1-3. If you have
time, you should also read "Publication, Publication", but the most
important is the reading in UPM.
The problem set has been posted on the course website. It is due Wednesday,
February 2nd at 7PM.
Last, I have office hours tomorrow from 10AM-12PM in the HMDC Computer Lab
in the basement of CGIS Knafel.
Hope you all are enjoying the snow!
Best,
Molly

Gov 2001 Students,
We wanted to send out some information on the videos.
First- the questions can be a little hard to hear in some of the videos so
we typed up transcripts of all the questions in the lecture video. Because
some people can't see the Video Annotation Page yet, we have placed the
transcript under the Lecture Notes section of the course website.
Second- if you can't get access to the video annotation tool you can watch
all the lectures from last year here:
http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k66011&pageid=icb.page326371&p…
Note: we would really prefer you watch them in the video annotation tool if
its available to you because we want you to annotate where you have
questions!
We are working on resolving the access issue as quickly as possible.

Newcomers to R might appreciate the opportunity to hear about R from someone
other than Molly and myself. It looks IQSS will be giving a series of
workshops this semester that you can go to.

Greetings Gov2001 Students,
This is mostly for the extension school students, but we wanted to let you
all know that the lecture videos (for this year) are now online:
http://cm.dce.harvard.edu/2011/02/22403/publicationListing.shtml
If you missed for the first day of class or live far away from Boston- be
sure to check it out.

Greetings Gov-2001 Students!
Welcome to the Gov 2001 list!
First a review of announcements from class today:
1. We are having an R orientation session tomorrow in K 354 (same room as
lecture and section) from 7PM-8:30PM. Bring your laptop if you want to
follow along. People who have never used R before are very strongly
encouraged to attend! I will post the materials online for those who cannot
make it. Try to download R before you come (see the technology handout for
details).
2. We are having section this Wednesday in K-354 from 7PM-8:30PM. Section
will be taped, and we will post all section material to the course website
each week.
3. All the handouts are available on the course website:
http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k76029&pageid=icb.page385645 The
technology handout is under Computing Documentation entitled: Software You
Will Need for Gov 2001. Be sure to read it along with the syllabus!
4. Readings for this week are "Publication, Publication" and the first three
chapters of Unifying Political Methodology. You also need to watch lecture
2 on the video annotation tool. (More on these below)
5. If you didn't sign the video release please come see me during section!
Second, a note about this list. Feel free to use this list to email about
anything related to the course -- finding groups to work with, problem sets,
questions from lecture, issues about the replication paper, etc. The list is
a terrific resource and you'll generally get a speedy response, no matter
what your request (and no matter the time of day!). Note that you must use
the email address that you used to sign up for the list in order to send an
email to the list. Also note that if you hit "reply," your message will
be forwarded to the entire list, not just to the person to whom
you're replying! Also don't forget the searchable list archive which is
filled with tons of good info.
http://lists.gking.harvard.edu/lists/gov2001_at_lists_gking_harvard_edu/
<http://lists.gking.harvard.edu/lists/gov2001_at_lists_gking_harvard_edu/>Third,
you may have noticed we have a lot of new technical gadgets. You will be
receiving an invitation to register with PollEverywhere (our cell phone
texting company) and NB (the text annotation tool). You will also
(hopefully) be granted guest access to the course website so that you can
turn in the first problem set (due Feb 2nd). The video annotation tool is
on its way. We will show you all of these things in section this week. If
you have a question, first check the technology handout, then email the
list.
Thanks again. We are really excited to have you all in the class!
Brandon and Molly
