hi all,
problem set 1 has been posted to the course website (go to
"Problem Sets" and then Problem set 1"). If you didn't pick up
our handouts on the final paper and on homework policy, please
download them from the course website. They can be found in the
"Problem Sets" folder and the "Final Paper Information" folder.
Please do not forget to hand in your writeup for problem set 1 by
next Thursday 6 pm EST. Go to "Problem Set Dropbox" and then
"Problem set 1" to submit two files: your writeup as a pdf or doc
file, and your R code as a text file.
cheers,
Holger

hi all,
we will have an introduction to R session tomorrow afternoon
(CGIS-Knafel S354; 4-5:30 pm) for those of you who don't have any
experience with R. If you can't make it to the session, two good
resources that will help you to get started are
Dalgaard, Peter. Introductory statistics with R (2002)
Fox, John. An R and S-Plus companion to applied regression. (2002).
Both books are on reserve at Fung Library (basement of CGIS). You
can also post R questions to the mailing list.
cheers,
Holger

hello all,
just as a quick reminder, we'll have our first sections tonight:
6-7 pm in N450
7-8 pm in N354
They are identical, so you don't have to attend both. They will
also be taped, so if you can't make it to either of them you can
watch them online later. We'll quickly review matrix algebra and
then spend most of the time talking about the weekly problem sets
and how to best approach the final research paper.
cheers,
Holger

hi all,
we've finally found rooms big enough for all of us. We will have
two identical sections back to back on Thursdays:
6-7 pm in N450
7-8 pm in N354
You can come to either of the two. This week, we will talk about
the problem sets and the final paper, and quickly review linear
algebra for those of us who haven't taken a linear algebra course
recently (or ever).
cheers,
Holger

hello all,
here are a couple of Gov 2001 announcements:
i) Please read Gary's Unifying Political Methodology
(chapters 1-2) until next class. Make sure that you also
read his short "Publication, Publication" article for
section on Thursday (see below). If you didn't pick up a
paper copy in class today please go to the class website and
click on "Final Paper Information." Gary's book is available
at the COOP.
ii) Justin and I will have sections on Thursday 6-7 and 7-8.
We're still trying to find a room that is big enough, so we
will annouce the location later. We will talk about the
weekly problem sets, the final paper, and also quickly
review the basics of linear algebra to get you set up for
the first problem set (which will be distributed on Thursday
after class).
iii) We have this mailing list so that you can get help
quickly on any course related questions, either from Gary,
Justin, and me, or --- and this is preferrable --- from each
other. As Gary mentioned in class today, if someone posts a
question that you happen to know the answer to, please do reply!
iv) We will have an extra session on how to use VNC on
*Wednesday*
evening. Location and exact time are still to be determined.
We will let you know once we know the room situation.
v) We will have an extra session on how to use R on *Friday*
evening. We don't know the room for that one either. We
strongly suggest that any of you who haven't used R before
attend this session. Proficiency with R is crucial for this
class, and the earlier you become familiar with it, the better.
vi) Starting this week, Justin and I have office hours.
Justin's office hours are Tuesdays 3-5, N-018, or by
appointment. My office hours are Wednesdays 4-6, N-021, or
by appointment.
vii) If you didn't pick up a paper copy of the syllabus in
class today, you can download one from the class website at
http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k10155
Please let Justin and me know if you have any questions. We
look forward to working with you this semester.
cheers,
Holger
