John,
this is a clever idea (and it would work in this particular problem), but
the answer is a pedagogical NO. The key in 3c is to learn how to write and
do a multivariate NR.

Subject: [gov2001-l] Fair game on 3c?
Hi Jen[n,s],
I want to treat the partials in 3c parametrically (with an analytical
justification for doing so) to make the problem a univariate case of
Newton's method. Is this fair game?
Thanks,
John
