A plug for our summer RA position.. anyone out there in Gov 2001 land interested?
---------
Prof. Lee Fleming of HBS, in conjunction with the Institute for Quantitative Social
Science (
http://iq.harvard.edu), is seeking a research assistant/coder for the summer. We
are currently building a database to follow the careers of inventors who patent in the
United States, something that has never been done before. While data are available on
every _patent_ in the US, there are no unique identifiers for _inventors_, so the main
challenge here is to disambiguate the inventors in the dataset. This is a non-trivial task
-- there are, for example, hundreds of John Smiths in the database, but not all of them
point to the same inventor, and similarly there are a number of inventors who go by
different names at different times (for example, including or omitting a middle initial or
using a different form of a name like Bob/Robert).
We would like to hire an RA for the summer who can help us implement a semi-supervised
clustering algorithm to disambiguate the dataset and document our methods. The result of
the summer's work will be a coauthorship on the dataset and accompanying journal
article. Because the dataset is the first of its kind and is also in high demand in a
number of fields, it is sure to be a heavily cited piece of work. We would be especially
enthusiastic about an RA who also has an interest in data visualization as it is often
easier to sell research in empirical social networks with informative and striking
visualizations.
The RA should have strong programming skills and experience in working with (free or
non-free) SQL databases. We are looking for somebody with experience in a statistical
language (R/SAS), but will also consider candidates with experience working on large
programming projects in any language. Experience, coursework or interest in machine
learning, statistics, and network/graph theory are a plus.
The research assistant would work as part of a large research team and while hours are
flexible, some portion of each day would require physical presence with the team, which is
housed at IQSS (in CGIS North). The duration of employment is also flexible.
* Duration - June 1 to August 31
* Hours/week - 35
Please send your cover letter and resume to Merce Crosas at mcrosas at
