Hi everyone,
Just to emphasize again before we all get flooded: e-mail Dan privately
(dhopkins(a)fas.harvard.edu) about section time and e-mail me privately
(yohai(a)fas.harvard.edu) when you have found a partner for your paper.
Note you shouldn't just hit 'reply' or 'reply all' to this
message (that
will send it to the whole list), but rather enter our e-mail address
directly.
In the future, when you have substantive questions, definitely e-mail the
entire list, as Gary discussed in lecture today.
Best,
Ian

Subject: [gov2001-l] Welcome to Gov 2001: Key Facts
Dear Gov 2001,
Again, welcome to the class. We really look forward to working with you
over the semester.
* Given the responses to the questionnaire, we are considering offering
two sections at 5 PM and 6 PM on Thursdays instead of 6 PM and 7 PM.
Please email Dan (dhopkins(a)fas.harvard.edu) *offline* if 1) you could not
attend either section if they met at 5 PM and 6 PM); 2) if you would
prefer the 5 PM section time. FOR THE FIRST WEEK AT LEAST, WE WILL KEEP
THE ORIGINAL SECTION TIME OF 6 PM, AND ASK THAT EVERYONE ATTEND THEN.
THE ROOM IS N-354.
We have added two new documents to the website, which should be
available via:
http://my.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?course=fas-gov2001
* under "Computing Documentation," you should see "computing.pdf,"
which
is your one-stop guide to getting connected to the servers we will be
using in this course. (In its second section, it also contains
information about getting R and other programs on your home computer.)
Those who have experience with VNC should feel free to try to follow these
instructions to access the servers--and let us know via this list of any
problems you encounter. NOTE TO GOV. 2000 STUDENTS: Our set-up is a bit
different from what you used last semester, so try the new set-up as soon
as possible, and report any problems to us.
Everyone is welcome at tomorrow's (Tuesday) 5 PM computing session on VNC
in CGIS N-018, but those who haven't used VNC before are especially
advised to come. Note that those without FAS computer accounts will not
be able to login to the servers just yet, but you should still come to the
session, as we can show you the basic steps you will need to take. You
get to CGIS N-018 by going to the basement and making several consecutive
left turns.
* under "Final Paper Information," you should see an Excel spreadsheet
which lists everyone who attended today's class and their research
interests. Please use this information as you try to identify potential
partners for writing the paper. Once you find a partner, email Ian
privately (for once, don't use the list). Also, if you want to be on the
list or off it--perhaps because you are an auditor, or in case we didn't
get a questionnaire from you--let Ian know (yohai(a)fas.harvard.edu).
The books are at the Coop under both FAS Gov. 2001 and Extension School
Gov. 2001, so check both places. As Ian announced in lecture, the
readings for this week are _Unifying Political Methodology_ Chapters 1-2,
"How to Write a Publishable (Class) Paper" (available here:
http://gking.harvard.edu/papers/papers.html) and chapter 3 of the Zelig
manual (available here:
http://gking.harvard.edu/zelig/docs/zelig.pdf).
We understand that the a new version of the manual is due out soon; in
case the chapter numbers change, we are assigning the chapter entitled
"Data Analysis Commands," a very useful introduction to R.
Finally, office hours for the two of us begin next week.
Lots to digest. Many thanks. And welcome.
Best,
Dan and Ian
