In stata there is a command called "saveold" where you can save the data
under older stata versions. But I never had any problems loading data from
Stata into R with the read.dta(foreign) command with data coming from stata
9 or even stata 10. Maybe try updating the library or your R installation.

Subject: Re: [gov2001-l] data in stata
If it's really the case that R won't read the data, the best option
would be to export the data from Stata into a csv and then import it
into R. It's almost impossible to paste data into R.

Does anyone know how to put a data set from stata
version 9 into R.
When I try
to use the code that is similar to this,
library(foreign); dat <- read.dta("P:/Gov2001/leader.dta")
it says error not a stata v. 5-8. dta file
Is there any way to just copy and paste the data into R?
