I noticed someone mentioned a recommendation for the O'Reilly book "R in a
Nutshell." I haven't used that book, but I did want to mention that you can
access it online through the library. Safari Tech Books Online is a useful online resource
you can access if you have Harvard library privileges (other universities probably also
have subscriptions). Go to
http://lib.harvard.edu/ and search for "Safari Tech Books
Online." Login with your Harvard credentials and then you'll have digital access
to "R in a Nutshell" and a number of other books that may be of interest.
I recently came across the following book (fresh off the press from O'Reilly), and it
may be of interest to people in Gov 2001 as a basic introduction to pulling data from the
major social networking sites: "Mining the Social Web." Many of these online
services/networks have non-trivial amounts of information in foreign languages as well, so
there are a lot of social science research possibilities.
