I have no idea is this the issue but it is worth a shot. Did you try
actually specifying the method="nearest" argument when you entered the
matchit command? For some reason, this seemed to make a difference when I
was playing around with it just now.

I just updated my R-version and all the packages (MacOS). I was doing
the same operation this afternoon on an older version of the package
and it seemed to work fine. Could this be a bug in the new MatchIt
package? Or am I entering s.th wrong?
