Starting with the \theta on the first page of chapter 4, there are several formulae that follow with a \bar notation. What does this \bar notation indicate?
We see it again on equation 4.4, this time on \beta.
Thanks!

Is anybody else having trouble accessing the video for lecture #3? I can
watch all the other ones (section and lectures), but not this last one? The
message I get when clicking on the Lecture 3 link is :"You are logged in as
'########' and do not have access to /2010/02/22403/L03. If this is not you,
please log in again."
The HUID number is the correct one for me, so I don't understand why I
wouldn't have access.
Would anyone know who I could contact about this?
Thanks very much,
Alonso
Hi everyone,
We got a couple of questions about this so I wanted to clarify the section
and problem set schedule. Section this will cover optimization of functions
with an eye towards finding the maximum of a likelihood. Section next week
(because we won't have a lecture) will focus on R and perhaps a little bit
of latex. Problem Set 3 will be sent out Thursday.
Best, Iain
Hey folks,
As promised, here's a list of people still looking for co-authors. (If I've
left you off by accident, please let me know.) I'd encourage those of you
still looking to get in touch with each other, preferably in the next week.

Research Interests: Interested in British politics, study of parliaments,
comparative politics more generally
Name: Miguel Solano
Email: msolano at fas.harvard.edu
Program: Extension School
Research Interests: Divergences in Economic Development, Political Economy
of Development, Institutions
Anything else relevant: I'm in the Boston area, so I'm generally free to
work on the paper.
Name: Michael Barnett
email: mlbarnett at gmail.com
program: Harvard Medical School - MD Student
Research Interests: Health policy, health care variation, network science,
genetics, systems biology
Other stuff: I'm based in the Longwood area but could travel if someone
shares my interests.
Name: Yousuf Marvi
email: usuf.marvi at gmail.com (preferred); otherwise, ymarvi at conncoll.edu
program: extension school
research interest: I am interested in topics in development studies, either
in
International Relations or Economics. I want to explore the constraints on
young democratic polities. What makes the any different than other
polities?
Does the nature of democracy affect their economic outcome?
And, etc other information: I am very flexible in terms of timing. I can
meet
Monday to Friday, after 5pm; anytime, on weekends. If need be,
i can take some time off and work earlier, as well, during the weekdays.
I work near Downtown Crossing, so I am equidistant from Longwood and
Harvard Square. Additionally, I am very comfortable with the Math,
so naturally, if somebody with a stronger background in R wants
to co-author, that would be brilliant.

interests: Quantative Assessments of Terrorism, Voting and Terrorism,
basically any
aspect of terrorism. I?m free to work on the paper at any time, though I am

lot about my grades, so I think that I?d be a responsible partner.

email: nmurphy at eecs.harvard.edu
program: CS PhD
interest: I'm taking the course largely to learn how social scientists
crunch their numbers, so the topic is actually kind of secondary to me. I
could be convinced to work on a lot of things. It would be great if someone
had a really, really large dataset they wanted to analyze, or a really large
simulation they wanted to run, as I can potentially help with that.
I live in Watertown, so I'm off-campus but can get on-campus fairly easily.

days of the week. Keen to do a replication paper relevant to international
health.

Hi all,
A friend recently pointed out this site to me, and I thought it might be of
interest to the class: http://detexify.kirelabs.org/classify.html You draw
a symbol with your mouse, and the site brings up the LaTeX code for the
symbol.
Enjoy,
Shelby
Hi all,
Does anyone know how to download a package that will enable me to use combinations and permutations?
I searched for these functions online, and I found corresponding commands, but unfortunately these commands seem to be in a separate package.

When asked what the max likelihood estimate is, do you report the likelihood, or the value theta that achieves the max likelihood?

Hey folks,
Hope you all enjoyed the weekend!
Just a reminder -- if you're still looking for a co-author for the
replication assignment, drop me an email with your name, program, what your
interests are, and any other pertinent info. I'll be circulating the names
of all who replied sometime tomorrow.
Also, I wanted to just give a special reminder to extension school students,
since I think there's some confusion. Extension students don't have to do
the replication paper; it its place, we'll assign you a final project, which
is similar in nature to a longer, more involved problem set. If you're an
extension student who would prefer to do the replication paper assignment
instead of the final project, you should get permission from the three of us
within the next week or so. There's more info on this in the syllabus, but
please let us know if you have questions.
all the best, Maya
