Here it is. It's written as an equation. hope this helps.
\subsubsection*{a} Write a function in {\tt R} for the following
\emph{piecewise} function,
\begin{equation}
g(x) = \left \{ \begin{array} {ll}
\text{sin}(x) \text{cos}(x) \hspace{0.5in} \text{ if } x<
-\frac{\pi}{2} \text{ or } x>\frac{\pi}{2} \nonumber\\
\nonumber \\
10 \text{sin}(x) \text{cos}(x) \hspace{0.35in} \text{ if } x \in
[-\frac{\pi}{2}, \frac{\pi}{2}] \nonumber
\end{array} \right.
\end{equation}

Out of curiosity, how did you produce the piecewise function in
problem 2 in LaTeX? I thought \begin{cases} was used, but it doesn't
want to recognize that command.
